Amina Elmi wins BogForum's Debutant Prize 2023 for her 'explosive debut' Barbarian
A huge congratulations to Amina Elmi who has just been awarded the 2023 Debutant Prize by BogForum for her poetry collection
Barbarian!
The jury’s motivation:
Barbar is an explosive debut. An unadorned, fearless insistence on cutting through the silence. Because, as Elmi writes: " why have poetry if it can't bear all our atrocities, sister." The poetry collection intends anger, it insists on rebellion, but it is also vulnerable, it is open, it is sorrowful, it is hopeful. It holds multiple movements within it: "I reach out to you, the one I scold", as it says. Elmi writes with a mature authority, an unrivalled certainty unlike that of a debutante. Barbar contains a complex kaleidoscope of substance. Elmi explores connections to history, language, religion, identity, a family that has broken up, because what is home to her is not home to her mother, the nomadic life is like an eternal break from oneself: "home can be two oceans away, and my mum never learned to swim. Imagine: woman on foreign shoreline, listening hard for her own name." Her poetry is both poignant and painful as it highlights the experience of being invisible. Elmi also writes brilliantly about the love between two women, the place of the body in this world, the grief of losing a father, and she draws new parallels between different domains, such as when Sufi mystic Rabia al-Adawiyya, rapper Jamaika and poet Shakespeare stand side by side - she simply makes language bigger. "I want every choice I make to be a gesture towards new opportunities", she writes, and that is what this poetry collection is, an opening towards doing something different.
